How We Work

The Process

A clear, structured engagement — from the first conversation to the final sea trial. No ambiguity, no surprises.

The Engagement

From First Contact to Completion

Every engagement follows the same disciplined sequence. Each stage has defined deliverables, clear communication protocols, and a decision point before we proceed.

Fees & Retainers

How We Are Paid

Our fee structure is straightforward and transparent. We are paid by our clients — never by yards, brokers, or suppliers. This is the foundation of our independence.

Day Rate

For surveys, vessel assessments, yard visits, and discrete consultancy tasks. Billed at an agreed daily rate plus reasonable travel and accommodation expenses. Suitable for single-service engagements.

Project Retainer

For full refit project management and extended owner representation. A monthly retainer covers all consultancy time, reporting, and on-site supervision for the duration of the project. Expenses are billed separately at cost.

Fixed Fee

For well-defined, bounded engagements — specification writing, tender management, contract review, or pre-purchase consultation. Agreed in advance, with no ambiguity about what is included.

All fees are agreed in writing before any work begins. We provide a clear letter of engagement setting out scope, fee basis, and terms. There are no hidden charges.

Common Questions

Before You Engage

Do I need a consultant if I already have a good relationship with a yard?

A good yard relationship is valuable — but it is not the same as independent oversight. Even the best yards have commercial interests that do not always align with yours. An independent consultant ensures the specification is met, the budget is controlled, and your interests are protected, regardless of how well you know the yard.

How much does independent consultancy typically cost?

Fees vary depending on the scope and duration of the engagement. As a general guide, consultancy fees on a major refit typically represent 5–10% of the total project cost — and in our experience, they are recovered many times over through better pricing, enforced specifications, and avoided disputes.

Can you work with yards we have already selected?

Yes. If you have already chosen a yard, we can step in at any stage — to review the contract, supervise the work, or represent your interests through to completion. We do not require involvement from the outset, though earlier engagement generally produces better outcomes.

Do you work on vessels outside Florida?

Yes. We are based in Florida but operate globally. We have managed projects in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Pacific. Travel and accommodation expenses are billed at cost and agreed in advance.

What size of vessel do you work with?

We work with sail and motor yachts from approximately 30 to 150 feet. Our experience spans classic wooden vessels, modern GRP and aluminium yachts, and performance racing boats. If you are unsure whether your vessel falls within our scope, contact us — we will tell you honestly.

How quickly can you start?

For an initial consultation, we can usually arrange a call within a few days. On-site availability depends on our current project commitments. We will give you an honest timeline at the outset — we do not overcommit.
